Four Plumbing Maintenance Myths to Keep in Mind
Plumbing fixtures require maintenance and upkeep to maintain functionality. However, there are four plumbing maintenance myths and old-wives-tales that need dispelling.
Myth #1 – If the Drain Clears, Then It Can’t Have a Clog
This myth is quite prevalent. It seems logical that if the drain clears, it doesn’t have a clog. However, this is not always true. A drain might clear but still have a clog or obstruction. The only way to be entirely sure of a clog-free drain is with a drain camera inspection by professional plumbers.
Myth #2 – Lemons Are All One Needs to Clean a Garbage Disposal
Running lemon skins or the lemons themselves through the disposal will make it smell nice, but it won’t disinfect or clean it. To properly clean and disinfect the garbage disposal, turn off the power to the unit and use a gentle cleanser and a brush. If one desires a fresh smell, it can be achieved by running cut-up lemons through after cleaning the disposal properly.
Myth #3 – Pouring Hot Water Down the Disposal While It’s Running Clears Clogs
This common myth suggests that running hot water down the disposal while it’s running will clear a clog. While it may help the disposal drain a little faster, it won’t dislodge serious clogs or obstructions. The best way to handle disposal clogs is to prevent them from happening. To keep the disposal spinning as it should, avoid putting bones, root vegetables, celery, other fibrous fruits and veggies, eggshells, coffee grounds, fruit pies, grease and fat, and potato peels down the drain.
Myth #4 – Hand Soap Works to Clean Plumbing Fixtures
Hand soap is designed to clean the skin, not plumbing fixtures made from brass, porcelain, stainless steel, chrome, or other materials. Using hand soap to clean these materials can actually damage them. Hand soap should only be used on the hands and face.
